What is it about death that we are so mortally afraid of?

Today, I'm gonna write about what seems to be a sombre and morose topic, Death.
What is death, really? The Oxford English Dictionary defines death as the act of dying, or to be in the state of death, which seems to be a some what foggy and convoluted definition, as in the end it still hasn't defined what death actually is. I mean, what the heck does that mean??? Death is to be in the state of death? Then I'd like to ask them, please, define the state of death.........
That however, is a question for theologists and scientists to debate.
What i wanna discuss is something a li'l different. Why are we so afraid of death?
What is it about death that we are so mortally afraid of?
To me, it seems to be a fear of the unknown, afraid of going to a place which we know nothing about. Man always has a fear of leaving his comforts to go into the unknown. Lets face it though, who among us would want to leave behind everything that we have and know, to push forward into the dark unknown, a place from which there is no return?
But while we may not want to go there, we must also realize that it is inevitable, to try and escape or avoid is impossible. So instead, why not accept it as something that must happen? When a close one dies, the grief is as much for the loss of the person as it is because people haven't accepted the fact that it was but inevitable. Grief is but natural, but let it be grief for having lost someone, rather than for him having died, for who are we to say that he/she shouldn't have died? To live on forever would be a blasphemy, for just as life is a gift, so is death.
All i can say is, if its our time, its our time, but lets fight like hell b4 we go.
"Do not go silently into the night"
Fight it, humor it, do what you want, but do not try to hide it, and do not fear it. For tis the fear of death that makes it seem so terrible, nothing else.
Death is but another step in the long journey that every soul must go through..... Simply a new place to see and experience.... For we know not were we go, but go we must.
Far better to face it head on, than feel our feet slipping beneath us, trying to outrun the inevitable.
